Priorities

Our Kershaw County School District has decided, on a whim, to make Friday this week an e-learning day. To those of you not familiar with such things this means the kids stay home and do their school work online.

This came about because one high school will be competing in a state championship game for their division. I say division because I think that’s the term. I do not follow football.

I wouldn’t dream of taking anything away from an accomplishment like this for the team involved, so let me say congratulations to the Camden High School Bulldogs. That is quite an accomplishment. Hard work should be rewarded, and I certainly hope y’all rise to the occasion and win Friday.

Closing down the entire school district for one team to compete in a championship is entirely foolish.

The priority of any school district should be the education of the children entrusted to them. And that is not the case here.

This school district is more concerned over a football game than education. More concerned over time off during the year than education.

Concerned over anything but education.

Our school district is a bit of a mess. It seems that many around the country are.

We received drafts of plans for the schedule for next year today. The first two plans start on July 25, 2022, and August 1, 2022.

In the email:

To begin with someone actually sat down on the taxpayers dime and drafted three schedules. Two which cannot be enacted by state law.

I suppose this is bureaucracy at its finest. Wasteful and uncalled for.

When I was a student we ended school before June and went back after Labor Day.

We had a summer vacation actually taking the summer off.

Now we have winter and spring breaks. The week leading up to these breaks, the children learn nothing because they are taught nothing. They go to school and have play days. There’s no homework. It’s a complete and total waste of time.

They shorten school days either at the beginning or the end of the day. Usually out of the blue.

We have Late Start Wednesday’s. The kids start school 30 to 45 minutes late on Wednesday. Supposedly this is so the teachers can do lesson plans and get caught up on paperwork. From what I’ve heard and seen, this is more of a thirty-minute break the teachers are taking. And how many bosses are rolling with that? Sorry boss gotta drop my kid off at school, late start Wednesday!

I’m sorry, teachers this is what you signed up for. This is what you get paid for. Yes the hours during school aren’t enough you knew going in that hours after school were required. This is the life.

It seems like we’ve gone from being in the business of education to be in the business of vacation at inopportune times.

You are a school district not a travel agency.

It would help if you got your priorities straight.

But no you’re more concerned about taking time off and passing out awards to each other. Awards that mean absolutely nothing to working families that pay your salaries.

This is just me ranting. I have absolutely no hope that anyone in the school district would read this and think to respond in an intelligent way. we live on the outer edge of the school district and have never been paid proper attention to by the school district.

I don’t see that happening before both of my children are well out of school.

That’s it. That’s the post.
