The Secret City
I’ve mentioned before that we vacation in the mountains of N.C. mostly because we love the area we stay in Maggie Valley. This also puts us in a great spot to visit the surrounding areas. It’s our base camp.
I’ve always wanted to visit Oak Ridge, TN. And if you don’t know what that is:
From The Atlantic:
Starting in 1942, the U.S. government began quietly acquiring more than 60,000 acres in Eastern Tennessee for the Manhattan Projectβthe secret World War II program that developed the atomic bomb. The government needed land to build massive facilities to refine and develop nuclear materials for these new weapons, without attracting the attention of enemy spies. The result was a secret town named Oak Ridge that housed tens of thousands of workers and their families.Β
This is history and to me it’s another thing on the weird bucket list. How could I not want to go? Now to convince the rest of the family. But you know, what the boss says goes.
As soon as my wife says we can do it, I’m there.
Here are some links with great information and pics.
